Schiele In Prison

Project Type: Logo Design | Poster Design

Programs Used: Photoshop | Illustrator

Role: Designer

Composer Jared Schwartz approached me to design a logo and poster for his opera, Schiele in Prison. This production delves into the life of the renowned—or, to some, infamous—artist, focusing on his teenage years and harrowing prison experience. The promotional materials I created were displayed throughout New York to advertise the opera. The images of Egon Schiele’s paintings were provided by the Albertina Museum in Vienna, Austria.

Every detail was carefully crafted to reflect the opera’s themes—from selecting a typeface reminiscent of Schiele’s handwriting to designing the poster layout to evoke prison bars. The imagery of Schiele behind bars reinforces the opera’s focus on his tumultuous imprisonment.

First Iteration for Poster Design

For the initial poster design, we explored the idea of using rusted metal textures to create the illusion of viewing the scene from inside a prison. As viewers approached, the details of the opera would gradually become visible. However, some passersby found it difficult to read, so we ultimately took a different design approach.
